A BIT ABOUT THERAPY

According to the American Psychological Association, “Psychologists help people of all ages live happier, healthier and more productive lives.” Through the use of various psychotherapy methods and collaborative treatment measures, my patients develop life-changing habits to help them cope with any of life’s various obstacles. My therapy sessions are designed to dissect personal issues and provide patients with effective tools to help them see the glass half full instead of half empty.

COMMON QUERIES

DO I NEED A THERAPIST?

It does not matter how big or small your problem may seem. If you feel your problem is affecting your daily living and your mental peace and you have tried to overcome it yourself but haven't been able to then please seek help. You can take therapy for anything from a divorce, to not being able to manage your child at home, anger issues or even simply to have a better mental health.

MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY GIVE ME ENOUGH ADVICE THEY KNOW ME BETTER. WHY DO I NEED TO SEE A THERAPIST?

While people and well wishers around you give you enough 'advice', a psychologist will not give you advice or ready made solutions. He/she will guide you through your own thought processes and behaviour, help you to understand yourself better. You are more likely to change if the process happens from within rather than mere advice. Human beings can alter their life by altering their attitude.

DO I NEED A PSYCHOLOGIST OR A PSYCHIATRIST?

Issues that have a biological component attached to it may require an assessment by a psychiatrist. Sometimes in order to relieve a person from acute distress medication is required. A psychiatrist is trained in the field of medicine and helps you to relieve your distress through medication. A psychologist is trained to understand your mind and will help you to relieve your distress through different therapies that help you to discover yourself and change your thought processes. Whether you need medication or not can be assessed by a psychologist. Both these fields work hand in hand.

HOW DO I SELECT A PSYCHOLOGIST?

Picking a right psychologist is very important. Sadly the terms life coach, counsellor, psychologist are all used very loosely but they all do not offer the same expertise. Check the qualification of the psychologist you choose. A person may have good counselling skills but may not have in depth knowledge about the human mind which is very necessary. Hence look for a qualified person who has gone through years of training and understanding of the subject rather than those who have done crash courses.

WHY ARE SESSIONS SO EXPENSIVE?

As opposed to a doctors consultation which lasts approximately 15 minutes maximum, each session with a psychologist lasts about 50-60 minutes. Since the time invested is more the charges do seem to be on a higher side. You can always talk to your therapist if you are not able to afford it. They may be able to work on a price for you.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

The number of sessions you require and the frequency will depend on the level of your distress and the complication of the problem. After two or three sessions, your psychologist and you will have decided some common goals to work on for you. At this time the number of sessions required for the future can be estimated.

WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK ABOUT ME?

If you see a psychologist you are not "mad". You are accepting that you are facing a problem and are seeking help. Something which only a very sane person would be able to understand and do. If you have a tooth ache you go to a dentist, if you have trouble with your thoughts you seek a psychologist. It is that simple. Sadly seeking help for your mental health comes with prejudice in people's mind. But it is time you analyse whether you want to care for yourself first or others?  Are those others who are judging you perfect themselves? If not you are in fact in a better position than them. Live for yourself.

HOW DO I CONVINCE SOMEBODY ELSE TO SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST?

If you are in any kind of relation with that person, the ideal way is to change yourself to accommodate the other person in your life. Since if the other person is not willing to change, forcing change on him/her will never work. If you work on yourself, you can help the other person. You could convince them to take a single session not because something is wrong with them but only so that the session will help you understand and deal with them in a better way. This will greatly increase the likelihood that they will atleast take the first session and go through the follow up sessions if they feel comfortable.
